Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Welcome!
If you've never visited Girmindl's Ghost before, I suggest you start by browsing through the articles in the FAQ section on the right. That will give you a better sense of what I'm up to here, and why there's a picture of H-gym to the left.

Feedback is encouraged in the comments and to the email address on the right. If you have specific knowledge of either the 2005 or 1979 team, please pass it along!

How do I know about 1979-80?: I was born in 1978, so despite attending my fair share of games in 1979-80 with my parents (who were rabid Shaker fans), I don't have any personal recollections of the team. So you might be wondering how I can blog about it.

Most of my base knowledge about the team comes from stories that have been passesd down over the years from my folks and from others. As I've mentioned before, I've been to a lot of Shaker basketball games in my life, and that means you hear alot of stories.

Also, in preparation for writing this blog, I've done some research at both the Colonie Town Libray and the New York State Museum, which have good microfilm archives of the Times Union, the Troy Record, and the Schenectady Gazette. I've used these newspapers to reconstruct the team's season and statistics, and also to get a sense of the players as best as I could.

However, the one area I still need help is on the details of the characters and the style of play in the games. If you have personal knowlecge of the 1979-80 team, please contact me at this email address. If you played on the 1979-80 team, please (please!) contact me, as I'd love to do a short interview with you.
