Today (2/12) in 1980
Today (2/12) in 1980: Shaker hosted Burnt Hills in their 18th game of the year and 16th Suburban Council matchup. A win would clinch them the outright Suburban title. Shaker handily beat Burnt Hills 63-38 in their first matchup of the season.
Tonight, it was a bit of a closer match. At the end of the 1st quarter, it was 16-16. Shaker picked it up a bit in the 2nd, but still only took a 33-28 lead into the locker room. Sam was held to only 9 points in the first half an Cain only 2.
Luckily, the Bison picked it up in the 2nd half. They opened the 3rd with a 10-2 run and finished the quarter up 49-36. They won the 4th going away - the final was 68-46 - but it was telling that the starters were still on the floor with 2 minutes to play, something that had only happened one other time this season (against Saratoga in the 1st round of the Shaker tourney.)
Perkins finished with 25 points but "only" 11 rebounds; Cain added 12 points, Meehan 10, and Tuecke 8. Digger Phelps, coach of Notre Dame, was in the stands watching Perkins. And he obviously thought that he had a good chance to land him, judging by his reaction to the press questions. "Obviously, I didn't come all the way up here tonight for nothing. I could have stayed in South Bend."
Partial boxscore:
Shaker (68): Perkins 12 3 25; Cain 5 2 12; Tuecke 3 2 8; Meehan 3 4 10; Brundige 3 0 6; Mitchell 1 1 3; Howard 2 0 4. Totals 28 12 68.
Shaker 16 17 16 19 - 68
B. Hills 16 12 8 10 - 46
Record: 18-0 (16-0 Suburban)
