Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Suburban skinny...

Suburban tourney, the skinny: Ok. I've looked at newspapers and websites. I've emailed people and read some message boards. I've even made a few phone calls. Here's what I can say for certain:

1) Shaker plays tomorrow night.
2) Against Colonie.
3) At Niskayuna High School.
4) At 6pm
.

This, of course, raises two distinct questions:

Q: If they have the best Suburban record, why are they playing the #3 seed and not the #4 seed?

A: Apparently, the Council doens't want teams plalying each other lots of times each year (like last year, when Shaker played Shen four times). Since Colonie and AP have already played twice this year, they didn't want to match them up again. Similarly, it's why the Maginn tournament was not really a tournament (i.e. Shaker didn't play Shen in the consolation game.) This seems reasonable to me - it doesn't really change that mcuh, and besides, the Suburban Tournament really doesn't mean anything in the big picture.

Q: Why play at Nisky? Is Nisky playing AP at Nisky?

A: My best information says that the locations were chosen ahead of time. I say "locations" because, in case your forgot, the other teams in the Suburban are also playing 4-team tournaments this week, just not for the "championship." And they aren't playing at the best teams' gym, either. Now, my best information tells me that Nisky/AP is going to happen right after the Shaker/Colonie game, at Nisky. That sucks for AP. And it doesn't seem particularly fair. But I've also heard from other sources that the Nisky/AP game isn't at Nisky, but if that were true, why is Shaker palying at 6pm? Who knows.

Anyway, here's a bracket that you can use to do your Suburban Council office pool:

From what I understand (which is minimal), the finals are Sunday at HVCC, although I don't know what time. And everything I read seems to indicate that the consolation game is Friday night, and I would assume it would be at 7:30, but I couldn't tell you where. This whole thing was a lot easier when they just had it at the #1 seed's gym.

At any rate, I'm going to go out on a limb and pick Shaker in the first game and Nisky to beat AP in the second game. The I'll take Shaker to win the title on Sunday afternoon over Nisky. I'll take AP over Colonie in the consolation game.

I'll have full previews of both games up tomorrow, and SJC and I will be at the Shaker game. We may or may not stay to watch AP/Nisky.
