Today (2/5) in 1980
Today (2/5) in 1980: Shaker traveled to Columbia for their 14th Suburban Council game of the season and their second meeting of the year with the Blue Devils. If you remember, the Bison destroyed Columbia 86-39 early in January.
Shaker had a bit of a chip on their shoulder going into this game. Columbia had been one of the main sources of hostility toward Sam over the past two years, and several players had tried to start a fight with him in the first game. Shaker took out their revenge tonight on the court.
It was 32-12 at the half, and when the starters were pulled at the beginning of the 4th quarter, it was 58-19. Only an evenly played 4th quarter (27-24 Columbia) kept the game from being the most lopsided in Shaker history. Sam finished with one his best all-around performances of his career: 33 points, 20 rebounds, 12 blocks, 4 steals, and 4 assists. He improved his shooting percentage for the year to an amazing 69 percent.
The rest of the Bison played well in their supporting role tonight. Despite starter Jim Brundige being out with a sprained ankle, the teams shot 58% from the field and (obviously) played magnificent defense. 10 men got in the scoring column.
Partial boxscore:
Shaker (82): Perkins 14 5 33; Cain 3 0 6; Tuecke 3 0 6; Meehan 4 2 10; Mitchell 2 0 4; Rowe 1 2 4; Brennan 2 1 5; Howard 2 0 4; Barker 1 4 6; Laliberte 2 0 4. Totals 36 14 86.
