Today (2/3) in 1980
Today (2/3) in 1980: Shaker did not play. Next '79-80 game is 2/5/1980 at Columbia. However, there is one piece of leftover news from yesterday that I neglected to put in the game recap. And that is that Coach Girmindl finally admitted what the newspaper reports had been begging him to say all season - that Shaker just might have the single best high school player in the whole country leading its team:
"Sam is unbelievable. It's hard to imagine anyone in the country can be more awesome - and that goes for Earl Jones [a 6-11 senior from West Virginia often mentioned as the best player in the country]...no one can say for sure, but I think the best player in the country right now plays for Shaker."Previously, Girmindl was unwilling to make that statement. Here are his comments from a preseason interview conducted in November 1979 with the Gazette:
"When you talk about college prospects , you start with Earl Jones. From then on there is some argument, but from what I gather, Sam ranks in the top 3 or 4."
