Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Today (2/2) in 1980

Today (2/2) in 1980: Shaker traveled to Niskayuna for their 13th Suburban Council game of the season and their second meeting of the year with Nisky. If you remember, Nisky gave Shaker a pretty good scare in their first meeting, staying within 7 at the end of the third before Shaker blew them out in the 4th.

The second meeting featured no such drama, at least not after the first two minutes. Nisky scored the first three baskets of the game, but then Shaker went on a 19-2 run for the remainder of the first to take a 19-8 lead. At the half it was 44-25 and pretty much over. Shaker took a 60-37 lead at the end of the 3rd and cruised to a 86-55 win.

The frontline was absolutely dominant tonight, combining for 62 of the 85 points. Perkins led the way with 30 points (and also added 20 rebounds). Cain had a season high 18 points, and Tuecke added 14.

The win moved Shaker within one game of the Suburban title, as a win in their next outing would assure them of at least a tie.

Partial boxscore:

Shaker (86): Perkins 12 6 30; Cain 9 0 18; Tuecke 7 0 14; Brundige 4 0 8; Meehan 1 4 6; Mitchell 2 2 6; Roche 1 0 2; Brennan 1 2 4. Totals 36 14 86.

Shaker 19 25 16 26 - 86
Nisky 8 17 12 18 -55

Record: 15-0 (13-0 Suburban)
Next '79-80 game: 2/5/1980 at Columbia
