Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Today (12/21) in 1979

Today (12/21) in 1979: Shaker hosted Niskayuna for it's 4th game of the year and 4th game in the Suburban Council. Up 37-24 at the half, Shaker turned in its worst single-quarter performance of the season, scoring only 9 points in the 3rd and taking only a 46-39 lead into the 4th. They won going away in the last quarter, and emerged with a 71-55 victory, their smallest margin of victory in the Suburban Council during the regular season. .Shaker put only 6 players in the scoring column. Strangely, it one was one of only 3 Shaker games all year that did not headline the Suburban wrap-up (or grab the front page) of the paper. Perkins had 27, 17 of them in the 4th quarter. Jeff Tueke added 14.

The win improved Shaker to 4-0, still tied with Mohonason for first place in the Suburban Council.

Here is the partial box score:

Shaker (71) - Perkins 9 9 27; Cain 4 1 9; Tueke 7 0 14; Meehan 1 4 6; Brundige 3 1 7; Mitchell 4 0 8. Totals 28 15 71.

Shaker 14 23 9 25 - 71
Nisky 10 14 15 16 - 55

Record: 4-0 (4-0 Suburban Council)
Next 1979 game: 12/27/1979 Shaker Inivitational Holiday Tournament, 1st round vs. Saratoga.
