Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Today (1/4) in 1980

Today (1/4) in 1980: The most dominating team ever to play section 2 basketball had its most dominating night tonight, whipping Columbia 86-39. If anything, that score understates the dominance, as Shaker led 80-28 midway through the 4th. Sam dropped 34 points, on 14 for 17 shooting from the field and a perfect 6 for 6 from the line. Tim Cain added 8 and Joe Barker put in 9.

The game was over practically before it started, as Shaker had a 10-0 lead and a 20-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Starting in the 3rd quarter, Shaker went on a 20-0 run that culminated in them having a 52 point lead at one point in the 4th quarter. None of the Shaker stareted played beyond the the 3rd quarter, and Shaker ended up putting 11 men in the scoring column.

The win improved Shaker to 7-0, still tied with Mohonason for first place in the Suburban Council at 5-0.

Here is the partial box score:
