Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Today (2/8) in 1980

Today (2/8) in 1980: Shaker traveled to Colonie for their 17th game of the season, and their 15th Suburban Council game. A win would clinch them the Suburban title. If you recall, Shaker defeated Colonie 73-51 in their first meeting. Although they won by 23, Shaker played poorly for much of that game.

History would repeat itself in the second meeting. Playing to a standing-room only crowd in Colonie's tiny old gym., Shaker played a poor first half. They won the 1st quarter 21-14, but lost the 2nd 19-18 and only took a 39-33 lead into the locker room.

Shaker came alive in the 3rd quarter, as Perkins began to get easy baskets inside and Cain started to hit some short range jumpers, but Colonie would not let themselves be blown out of the gym. At the end of the 3rd, it was 56-46 Shaker, the second smallest lead Shaker had taken into the 4th this season. At the beginning of the 4th quarter, Coach Girmindl was ejected from the game for arguing with the referees (he had alrady gotten a technical in the 1st quater). That was just the spark the Bison needed, as they opened the 4th with a 16-2 run that gave them a 72-48 lead and put the game away. The coasted to a 82-58 final.

Perkins led the way with another huge night: 34 points, 27 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Cain added 15 points and 9 rebounds. Chuck Meehan was the only other Bison to hit double figures, with 10. This also marked the 4th straight game that the Bison had put up 80 or more points, bringing their season average up to 76.8 pts/game.

Partial boxscore:

Shaker (82): Perkins 13 8 34; Cain 6 3 15; Tuecke 2 1 5; Meehan 2 6 10; Brundige 3 2 8; Mitchell 1 0 2; Rowe 1 0 2; Laliberte 1 4 6. Totals 24 24 82.

Shaker 21 18 17 26 - 82
Colonie 14 19 13 12 - 58

Record: 17-0 (15-0 Suburban)
Next '79-80 game: 2/12/1980, home vs. B. Hills
