Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Friday afternoon notes..

Friday notes: File this post under "It's Friday afternoon and I'm sick of work so I'm going to just write on my blog." Here are some things I was thinking about this afternoon:

1) So, when's the game?: No joke, I got 7 emails this morning asking me when the game is on Sunday. It looks like it's at 7pm at Hudson Valley. I have no idea how the supposed snow storm will affect it.

2) The TU local rankigs: If you remember, I skewered the Times Union area rankings a few weeks ago. And then they cleaned up their act a week later (Are you taking credit? -ed. Well, it was a strange coincidence, no?). Now they're at it again. Here's what they published today:
Class AA rankings

1. Schenectady
2. CBA
3. Shaker
4. Colonie
5. Maginn
At least they have Shaker in a resonable spot. I'm not going to bother shredding them this week, but just think to yourself "who would I least like to play in sectionals, and in what order" and come up with your own rankings. I guarantee they don't match these.

3) The new state rankings: The New York State Sportswriters put up their new rankings for the week. Still no sign of Shaker, although CBA and Schenectday are on there. I suspect the Bison are right on the bubble - it's pretty hard to keep a 16-3 team far from the top 25.

4) Professional photography: Shaker may not get any love from the print Times Union in terms of coverage, but they got a nice saturation of photos today: one close-up shot of Coach Holmes talking to the team, one shot of Brad driving to the hoop, and one online shot of Hans moving the ball up the court.

5) What to write next week: No Shaker games next week, so I'm going to try to concentrate on two things: first, it will definitely be "essay week": I'll get the Holmes interview up, I'll finish my magnum opus on the Shaker student section, and I'm going to do a two-day sectional preview, which will include my rundown of the various venues and a historical treatment of Shaker's sectional fortunes. Second, I'm going to try to do some major work on the '79-80 stuff, which I've been delinquent about.
