Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Today (1/15) in 1980

Today (1/15) in 1980: Shaker hosted Scotia for their 8th Suburban Council game of the season and their 10th game overall. Shaker entered the contest undefeated, while Scotia was a bottom-feeder in the Suburabn, 1-7 in the league and 1-9 overall.

The game held true to the records, as Shaker came away with an win, 68-42. It was 21-10 at the end of the 1st, and the Bison cruised from there. More surprsingly, however, is that neither Perkins nor Cain had much impact on the game at all. Sam only played the first quarter and a few minutes in the 3rd, tallying just 8 points. Cain added just 6.

Instead, Shaker got some balanced scoring from a variety of different players. Tuecke had 12, Meehan had 7, and Brundige 7. Reserves Mike Mitchell (10), Joe Barker (6), and Dave LaLiberte (7) combined for the rest.

The game was ho-hum enough that the Times Union barely wrote anything about it (just 3 paragraphs), although they did give it the headline and lead, as usual, in the high school basketball wrap-up.

Elsewhere in the Suburban, Burnt Hills upset 2nd place Mohon, dropping them 2 games behind the Bison in the standings. That was big because Shaker's next game is a Saturday afternoon affair at Mohonason.

Here is the partial box score from the Scotia game:

Shaker (68) - Perkins 4 0 8; Cain 3 0 6; Tueke 4 4 12; Meehan 3 1 7; Brundige 3 1 7; Mitchell 5 0 10; LaLiberte 2 3 7; Baker 2 2 6; Roche 1 0 2; Rowe 0 3 3. Totals 26 16 68.

Shaker 21 14 17 14 -68
Scotia 10 8 10 14 - 42

Record: 10-0 (8-0 Suburban Council)
Next 1979-80 game: 1/19/1980 vs. 2nd place Mohonason, in an old-fashioned Saturday afternoon game.
