Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

Sectional Preview III

Sectional Preview, Part III of III: I just realized I might not have time to post this on Wednesday, so I'm going to do it now.

[This is part three of a three part sectional preview. Back on Saturday, I reviewed Shaker's sectional fortunes during my lifetime (1978-2005). Monday, I wrote a quick post quoting Sam Perkins on his outlook on sectionals. And earlier today, I looked at the gyms of the section two tournament. Today, I'll be making my predictions.]

First, three notes before my predictions:

First: GO TO THE SHAKER GAME AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS!!!!!

Second: The News Channel 13 all-stars are out. Well, at least the top 7. The rest are due out soon. Congrats to Brad for making the team.

Third: Here's a quick Queensbury preview. The Spartans are 8-3, 3-9 in the Foothills Council. They've beaten Fonda, Broadalbin, South Glens Falls (twice), Hudson Falls, Plattsburg, Peru, and Troy in the play-in game. They've lost to Glens Falls (twice), Scotia (twice), Gloversville (twice), Stillwater, Albany Academy, Johnstown (twice), Hudson Falls, Corinth, and CCHS. So, in essence, they haven't really beaten anyone that good, but they have played a very tough smaller school schedule: Glens Falls, Gloversville, Scotia, and Stillwater are all very good teams. Queensbury does not have anyone averaging more than 10 points/game, but they get balanced scoring from their guards and forwards (full scoring stats here). They don't look to have a ton of size, but they aren't the smallest team either. Prediction: It's always hard to get a feel for the foothills teams without seeing them play, but I see the Bison walking away with this one. I'll say 68-49.

Ok. Moving on. Here are my predictions for AA sectional first and second rounds:

1st round - 2/22

SHAKER over Queensbury
ALBANY over Shen
NISKY over Amsterday
SCHENECTADY over Bethlehem
COLONIE over Catholic
MAGINN over B. Spa
Lasalle over COLUMBIA
CBA over Guilderland

I've said it before, I don't see a whole lot of upsets in the first round. People are talking up Amsterdam, Catholic Central, and even B. Spa for the past few days. I just don't see it.

2nd round - 2/26

SHAKER over Albany
SCHENECTADY over Niksy
COLONIE over Maginn
CBA over Lasalle

I'm much less confident in these picks. The only one I see as a mortal lock is CBA. They are just playing awesome right now. Most people think Maginn is better than Colonie, but I think Maginn is vulnerable, so I'm taking the Red Raiders. Schenectady should beat Nisky, they are a much better team, but those are two teams going opposite directions as of late, so it wouldn't shock me if Nisky pulled off the upset. And Albany is full of talent and could easily beat the Bison if Shaker doesn't play well. However, if the Shaker plays to its potential, they are a better team than Albany.

So here's how I see the bracket after Sunday:

Hope to see you at the game tomorrow night!
