Friday afternoon notes...
Notes for a boring Friday: If you're as uninterested in your day job as I am right now, here are a few things you might want to think about this afternoon:
1) On the record: I published my interview with Coach Holmes earlier today.
2) Tonight's games: Normally, I'd be headed over to the CBA-Schenectday Big 10 title game tonight, but it's my brother-in-law's birthday, so that's out for me. I like CBA tonight. I'll say 66-58. The only other games tonight are the Saratoga-Guilderland play-in game and the Troy-Queensbury play in game. I like Saratoga - they beat Guilderland pretty bad on Sunday. I'll say 55-47. And I'll take Troy over Queensbury, although I have very little knowledge of either team.
3) Upsets: A bunch of people have been emailing me and asking abou various 1st round sectional matchups. For some reason, there's also been lot of chatter on syracuse.com about some pretty spectacular upset picks. Here are my thoughts on the upset potential - meaning the chances for the lower seed - for each 1st round game:
Troy/QHS upsets Shaker: Very low probability. A "stunning" level upset if it happens.
Toga/G'land upsets CBA/SHS: Ditto. Actually, more stunning, simply because the Bison don't tend to blow people out the way CBA/SHS do. Not that I wouldn't be dancing around my apartment if this happened. I'd be estatic.
Bethlehem upsets CBA/SHS: Ditto. And ditto on the dancing.
B. Spa upsets Maginn: Everyone is talking about this one, saying that if the refs let Spa get physical, they can pull it off. I'm not buying it. Maginn may not walk through this game like the Big boys in the Big 10, but I'm pretty sure they will win it relatively easily. Maybe something like 59-47.
Amsterdam upsets Nisky: A lot of people are also talking this one up, but i doubt it. Nisky looked really good Sunday when they beat Shaker. I don't think they have game to beat CBA or Schenectday, but I'm pretty sure they'll take care of business aginst Amsterdam.
Shen upsets Albany: Now here's an upset that no one is talking about, but I can imagine happening. It's a long shot, but Albany isn't playing that well. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. But unlike the above games, it wouldn't totally shock me if it happened.
CCHS upsets Colonie: This is one I can definitely imagine happening. Honestly, I haven't been that impressed with Colonie this year. And CCHS did beat Schenectady on the road. They've also played a tough schedule this year - Big 10 plus Glens Falls twice.
Lasalle upsets Columbia: I actually think Lasalle is more likely than not going to win this game. In a straight 16-team seeding, Lasalle would almost certainly be seeded lower than Columbia. So I think this "upset" is probable.
