Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Today (2/15) in 1980

Today (2/15) in 1980: Shaker traveled to last-place Scotia for their 19th game of the season, and their 17th Suburban Council game. Back in January, the Bison had defeated Scotia 68-42. No one expected much resistance from Scotia this time around, and none was found.

The Bison jumped out to a 26-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and coasted the rest of the way. The starters were lifted midway through the second quarter, with Shaker holding a 38-13 lead. They returned briefly to start the 2nd half, but were taken out for good with 4:02 to play in the 3rd quarter and Shaker holding a 60-21 lead. Sixty to Twenty-one! The reserves beat Scotia 23-17 the rest of they way and the game ended 83-38 Shaker. It was the 5th game in their last 6 that the Bison cleared 80 points.

Sam finished with 28 points in his limited appearance, and Cain added 14 in the same amount of time. Dave Laliberte added 11 and Joey Barker put in 9.

John Brennan '81 tells this story from the Scotia game: "Coach Girmindl didn't take any crap from anyone...and he always stuck up for his players. At the game at Scotia, some of the fans were really getting on Sam, saying stuff about him, asking Coach how much he paid for him to come to Shaker, the usual garbage. We had this bucket of ice that we kept near the bench, and Coach just picked up a couple of cubes and lightly flung them into the stands. That quieted them down."

Partial boxscore:

Shaker (83): Perkins 13 2 28; Cain 7 0 14; Tuecke 4 0 8; Meehan 1 3 5; Brundige 1 0 2 ; Mitchell 1 0 2; Roche 2 0 4; Barker 3 3 9; Laliberte 5 1 11. Totals 24 24 82.

Shaker 26 18 23 16 - 83
Scotia 7 13 7 11 - 38

Record: 19-0 (17-0 Suburban)
Next '79-80 game: 2/19/1980, regular season finale vs. Mohonason
