Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Bracketology

Bracketology: Ok. So the sectional bracket has been officially finalized. Here's a copy you can print and fill out for your office pool (discussion below):

First round games are at the home gym of the higher seed. Second round games are at UAlbany at times already determined. So Shaker will play the winner of Troy/Queensbury at 7pm on 2/22 at Shaker. If they win, they will play the Shen/Albany winner at 5:30pm on Sunday 2/26 at UAlbany. Beyond that, we'll worry about later.

Also note that the Big 10 top seed wouldn't be determined until this Friday night, when CBA and Schenectady play a 1-game playoff for the title, at 7pm at HVCC. Here are some thoughts on the bracket:

1) I don't see a whole lot of 1st round upsets: Obviously, anything can happen, but it wouldn't surprise me if the higher seeds won every first round game. The exception is that Lasalle/Columbia game - I'd probably say that Lasalle is the favorite. Both teams are classic middle of the pack-ers in their leagues, and the Big 10 is stronger this year. Lasalle has been playing well as of late and I think they matchup favorably with Columbia. Then again, if Zampier goes nuts, Columbia could win in a blowout. Definitely the most interesting first round game.

2) I can't decide if I like Shaker's draw: the only real issue in the final weeks of the season was whether Maginn or Albany was going to be the Big 10 #3 seed. Maginn got it, so assuming the seedings hold, Shaker would play Albany in the second round. I like staying away from Taylor Battle - it wouldn't surprise me if he explodes for close to 50 at some point in this tournament. But on the other hand I feel like Shaker matched up well against Maginn in December. Albany is more of an unknown.

3) Don't make any plans for 2/22: If you're reading this, you better be at the game next Wednesday. And you better bring at least one friend who doesn't normally go to the game. It's time to get serious. So grab your brother, dig your lungs out of the closet, and go buy some blue face paint. It's go time.
