Girmindl's Ghost

A diary of Shaker High School's 2005-2006 basketball season, a retelling of Shaker's fabled 1979-1980 season, and general commentary on high school hoops, updated daily...

"I like sitting in the back row. I found that sitting against the wall is just easier on your back." -Dean Smith, on the comfort of the H-gym bleachers

Today (2/18) in 1980

Today (2/18) in 1980: The Bison finished the regular season today by absolutely crushing second-place Mohon, 79-36. The banner headline in the Times Union read, "Shaker finishes regular season perfect, 20-0."

That completed a 2 year stretch in which the Bison were 40-0 in regular season play. It was their 44th consecutive section 2 victory. By the end of the following year, the Bison would own a 59-1 regular season record over the past three campaigns.

But today wasn't about longterm records. It was about finishing perfect. And finish perfect they did.

The Bison led only 12-10 after the first quarter tonight, but went on a 53-9 run over the next two quarters and led 65-19 when the starters retired for the night with 3:13 left in the 3rd quarter. The reserves cruised to a 79-36 victory.

Sam finished with 26 points. Cain, Tuecke, and Meehan each added 10.

The Bison closed the regular season perfect, as many people had expected. Few, however, had expected them to win their regular season games by an average margin of 29 points. They were challenged in the 4th quarter only one time, by Saratoga.

The section title was 4 games away, and the state title 3 games beyond that. Everything was looking good, and everything was going according to plan. Shaker basketball was closing in on its destiny.

Partial boxscore:

Shaker (79): Perkins 9 8 26 ; Cain 5 0 10; Tuecke 4 2 10; Meehan 2 6 10; Brundige 2 1 5 ; Mitchell 1 0 2; Howard 1 0 2; Roe 1 0 2; Barker 2 2 6; Laliberte 3 0 6. Totals 24 24 82.

Shaker 12 25 26 16 - 79
Mohon 10 5 6 15 - 36

Record: 20-0 (18-0 Suburban)
Next '79-80 game: Sectional 1st round, TBD
