Game Recap: 1/13/06

Game Recap - "I love beating Colonie": Since I couldn't go to the game and it took place four days ago, I'm going to keep this recap short. I got a number of game recaps from various readers, including Colonie Spotlight reporter Matt R., so I have a decent sense of the game and even some coach quotes.

The first half played pretty even, Shaker winning the first quarter 11-9 and the second quarter 13-11. The Colonie defense held Brad to 6 points, and forced the Bison offense into quite a few turnovers. But the Bison turned up the heat in the 3rd quarter. Brad and Griff scored all 14 of Shaker's points in a 14-6 run that started the 3rd quarter and effectively put the Bison over the hump for good.

Colonie made a run in the 4th quarter, including two three pointers by Chuck Lattimer, the second of which got the lead down to 4 with 3:12 to go. But that was a close as Colonie would get. Griff and Brad dominated the second half - Brad finished with 25, Griff with 12 - and the turnovers went way down as well. John Hans added 9 points, and the Bison won 59-51.

Said Coach Holmes:
Our big focus in the second half was to not turn the ball over and get it in to the big guys. We weren't happy with our ball handling early on. I think we did a much better job of executing and getting Brad the ball in the third quarter.
Colonie coach Doug Kilmer agreed with that assessment:
I think we played tough defense, but you can only hold Brad down for so long, if he gest that low post position...there's no way we can stop that...he's an awesome player.
Reader Marc M. checked in with this report:
Great game for Griff, tons of rebounds and tough inside play. He has become a real leader. All around a decent performance by Shaker, not dominant, but effective. I'd say a few more turnovers than the B. Spa game, but Colonie is [a better team than B. Spa]. For some reason, Colonie tried to pound it inside, but it looked to me like they could have scored more from the perimeter. They have some good outside shooters. And Brad had a great second half.
And I got this email, straight from Brad Sheehan:

freshman by 30, jv by 22, and us by 8 but it was really much more.....i love beating colonie.
That's great. I heard the 6th man was jumping, but I also heard the school was being very annoying in their attempts to sit on the noise. Please.

Six baskets by Griff, that's a great effort. One thing that irks me about the TU boxscores is that I can never figure out what they mean by putting someone in there who has no points, like they have Kahnle today. Does that mean he played, or that he took a shot? If it's the former, does that mean Bogdan didn't play? It probably means he took a shot, but who knows.

A nice victory. As I've mentioned before, this stretch to the end of the regular season is filled with all winnable games, and getting themselves to 17-3 by the end of the Suburban Council tournament is not out of the question by any means. That's four in a row now, time to make it five.

Final score: Shaker 59, Colonie 51. Full box score here. Shaker improves to 10-3 overall and 8-1 in the Suburban Council.

Next Game: Tonight, at Guilderland.
