Today (12/4) in 1979
Today in 1979 (12/4): The Times Union published it's suburban council basketball preview. From the article:
Yeah, that's a pretty nice lineup. In the coming weeks I'll find time to write up detailed profiles of each of those players, since very few people remember just how great the players surrounding Perkins were in 1979, particularly Cain, who is still the all-time leading scorer in Manhattan College history.
Another note to this article is that even 26 years ago, the Times Union's coverage of high school hoops lagged behind the other local papers. For instace, try this quiz: does the following statement apply to 2005 or 1979?
Shaker's team got a three paragraph write-up preview in the Times Union sports section, while the Gazette did a two-page spread on the team, with several large pictures of their superstar.
Trick question, it's true in both years!
As tough as it may be for a 24-1 team (losing only to state champion Mount Vernon) to be better than last season, Shaker still figures to be improved this year.
Shaker's super 6-9 center, Sam Perkins, who dominated Capitaland high school basketball with 24.2 points, 16 rebounds, and eight blocked shots a game, shoud be improved after adding 25 pounds (to 220) to his once-skinny frame. Shaker lost shooting guard Mike Sally, but replaces him with a shooter of perhaps better ability in Jim Brundige, a key reserve last season. Also lost to graduation were 6-4 and 6-3 forwards Jeff Almstead and Mike Budka, but replacing them are 6-7 Tim Cain and 6-6 Jeff Tueke, a piar of juniors with greater scoring potential. And back along with Perkins is point guard Chuck Meehan.
