On tap this week
On tap this week: Mondays in this slot are going to be previews of the week's game as well as outlines of essays that I plan to author during the week. I'll also print the updated Suburban Council standings for the week.
Two games this week for the current Bison - tomorrow night at home vs. Columbia and Friday night at Shen. An outlook:
Columbia (1-0, 1-0 Suburaban) is led by Yale-bound Alex Zampier, who is described by the Gazette basketball preview as possibly "the best all-around player in the league." A 6'2" G/F, Zampier average 21.3 points last year for Columbia's 8-13 team and plays his AAU ball for the New England Playaz, a highly-rated team. He scored 19 last week against Burnt Hills. A pair of 5'10" guards - Tyler Gaige and Brayton Chase - each added 15 points and each made three 3-pointers in Columbia's 64-58 win. Inside the paint, Columbia's big men are more rebounders than first looks on offense, but they do have some big bodies on the squad: 6'4" junor Steve Eames, 6'5" senior Tim O'Connell, and 6'5" junior Kyle Moldoff.
Shen (2-1, 1-0 Suburban Council) lost their opener to Newburgh in the Burnt Hill Thanksgiving tournament, then put an old-fashioned beating on Berkshire in the consolation game. More recently, they opened their Suburban schedule with a solid win over Saratoga. 13-8 last year, Shen is never an easy opponent. The school is just too damn big for the team to be awful, or even mediocre. They are led this year by senior guards Cameron Critchlow and Silah Banks, both of whom will probably average double-figures in points this year. Shen will certainly face a height disadvantage against many teams, with many of their regulars standing under 6'0" and only 6'5" Michael Shauffert with serious length. Still, their guard play will be good and I expect Shen to have a pretty good season.
The following essays are on tap for this week: game recaps from the Columbia and Shen games, an interview with a few members of Shaker's "6th man" cheering squad which I'll be conducting tomorrow night, and - by popular demand - a photo-essay that serves as a companion to my existing essay onH-gym the new gym. I'm gearing up to do player interviews, but that still has to be arranged and probably won't start until next week.
In the 1979-80 segment this week, I'll have a game recap from the 12/14/1979 Shen game and *maybe* a player interview, which i'm working on scheduling right now.
